It’s been the talk of the last few weeks and the Christmas Number 1 winner will be announced in the next 24 hours.

X Factor winner Joe McElderry has been favourite to claim the Christmas number 1, but that has been seriously challenged by the Facebook campaign for Rage Against The Machine’s Killing in the Name.

Rage Against The Machine were ahead in the race for Christmas number 1, outselling the X Factor winner by almost 9,000 sales.  Midweek chart figures that were leaked onto the internet, revealed that just over 297,000 copies of Joe McElderry’s The Climb had been sold against 306,000 for Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In The Name.

Simon Cowell has slammed the Facebook campaign to get Rage to the top spot, calling it “stupid”, “cynical” and “very Scrooge”.  Cheryl Cole, who was Joe’s X Factor mentor, also said she thought the campaign was “mean”.

Simon Cowell speaks out about the Christmas number 1

Author: Christmas Number One | Filed under: Christmas Number 1 Saturday Dec 19,2009

simon_cowellIn an exclusive interview with NME, Simon Cowell has said that he has done the UK public a “favour” having “killed” the Christmas Number One race.

The X Factor mogul has seen the last four winners of the show bag the festive top spot, while this year’s winner Joe McElderry is favourite to top it this year despite competition from Rage Against The Machine.

Speaking in the Christmas issue of NME, which is out now, Cowell said that he had helped rescue the Christmas Number One from a tradition of “horrible” songs.

NME asked if it was a shame that The X Factor had “killed the race for Christmas Number One” Cowell replied: “Yes and no. I think we were getting to a point where it was all becoming like ‘The Millennium Prayer’ [Cliff Richard's 1999 song that was knocked from the Christmas Number One slot by Westlife] and I just didn’t like that song.

“I think we all have this belief that the Christmas Number One was just amazing songs… but actually when you look at them over recent years it was Bob The Builder, Mr Blobby… there’s a tradition of quite horrible songs. I think I’ve done everyone a favour.”

Radio 1 DJ,Chris Moyles, also spoke out about the Christmas number on his show recently:

“When Bob the Builder was Number One at Christmas, it was between him and Eminem! There were all these serious musicians saying it has to be Eminem, but then there were people like me saying ‘well actually it would be funny if Bob the Builder beat Eminem to Number One though… so it just depends what side of the fence you want to sit on.”
